TO PREVENT THE HUE OF YOUR HAIR from fading, cover it up. “A hat is an obvious option, but you can also pull it back in a French twist or a topknot so less of its is exposed,” says Jet Rhys, owner of Jet Rhys Hair Salons in San Diego. Finish with a a sun-shielding styler like L’Oreal Paris Elnett Satin Hairspray UV Filter ($15, drugstores).
Some sun is unavoidable, so make sure your haircolor has subtle variations in it to help camouflage fading. Try John Frieda Precision Foam Colour Salon Blends ($13, drugstores), which has three tones per kit. And don’t overdo it with hot tools. “Overprocessed hair is more susceptible to UV damage,” says Alli Webb, founder of Drybar, headquartered in L.A. When you do use them, start with a heat protector, like Toni&Guy Hair Meet Wardrobe Heat Protection Mist ($15, drugstores).

Those glossy glamour shots on boxes of at-home hair color may catch your eye with a brilliant shade, but it’s vital to keep in mind that the color may not necessarily turn out the same on you. “The color you end up with depends on your current hair color and can also be affected by any processing you may already have done to your hair,” explains Jet Rhys, the owner of Jet Rhys Salons in San Diego. In general, you’ll be safe if you select a neutral or warm shade. When in doubt, select a lighter color than you want, because while you can always go darker, removing color isn’t always as easy.

Fashion Fairytale | Jet Rhys Hair

DSC_0857.jpg

// On friday I went to the Jet Rhys Hair Salon in Hillcrest, San Diego.

After being upset about my hair for the past couple of months I was really looking forward to trying a new salon. The last place I went to left me with a cut that was too short and a color that was just a bit off. However, the Jet Rhys hair salon provided me with an excellent blonde color and wonderful experience that took place in their hip and architecturally interesting salon in my favorite neighborhood, Hillcrest. Being a design student I not only take into account the beauty aspects of a salon but I tend to look at the interior and esthetics as a whole. The Jet Rhys Salon works with Bumble and Bumble Products, which smell incredible and are very popular among celebs and during the New York Fashion Week. At the Jet Rhys Salon, Brock was in charge of my hair and I have to say that he is a color magician! He added some subtle highlights and unified my hair to make it look healthier and more natural. As a finishing touch he added some of Bumble and Bumble’s Drypun Finishing Spray that instantly added some volume to my fine hair and held a kind of “airy” texture. Brock and his assistant were both very nice, with a passion for every detail and I could easily see that they enjoyed their job. While I was getting my hair done I had a nice conversation with Brock about the whole process of continuous training that each member of the Jet Rhys team has to undergo in order to be so superb. I finally reached the blonde that I’ve always wanted and I’m super happy that I found a salon in San Diego that I will always look forward to visiting again and again. I strongly recommend!

How to Have Healthy and Shiny Dark Hair

Dial up the radiance on rich brunette and intense black hair color with top secrets from celebrity colorists — and keep your dark hair looking lustrous and healthy.
How-to-Have-Healthy-and-Shiny-Dark-HairColor Without Fear

The upside to going dark is that it doesn’t require damaging ammonia and peroxide to lift the cuticle (the outer layer of the hair), as going lighter would. Dyeing your hair a darker shade can even leave strands healthier than before you hit the bottle, because the color often contains conditioning ingredients that strengthen hair, says Jet Rhys, the owner of Jet Rhys Salons in San Diego.
“Opt for a vegetable dye or semipermanent hair color with emollients and proteins for hydrated hair that shines,” says White. Use a product specifically tailored for brunette and auburn hair, such as Garnier Nutrisse Ultra Color.

Wrap Strands in Ribbons

by Krista Bennett DeMaio

Brighten up drab hair—and skin—with “ribbons” of color, a new highlighting technique, says San Diego-based colorist Jet Rhys. What is it? Two hues—a lighter and darker shade—about the width of a ribbon are sandwiched together and placed around the hairline or throughout the top layer of hair, as seen on Kate Beckinsale, Rhys says. Bonus: The combo of depth and light makes limp hair look so much thicker.

Hair Color Trend: Subtle Ombré or Sombré

Hair Color Trend Alert! Ombré’s Chicer Cousin, The Sombré

We’re so done with bi-color hair.

sombere

By Grace Gold

Ombré came and conquered. With a vivid shift from dark to light hair and a bold line of demarcation, the trend was no doubt the celebrity favorite for several seasons.

Now that the moment is over (don’t take it personally, ombré—it happens to every trend), top stylists are already waxing poetic about their newest obsession: a reimagined version of the gradation.

Enter sombré (subtle + ombré), a coloring technique that allows for a softer, more natural diffusion that even those of us who aren’t red carpet regulars or bold personalities can actually pull off with ease. Think color that gradually fades from top to bottom, much like a little kid’s long hair gets those gorgeous, naturally lighter ends in the summer. It’s a look that seems more refined, less fashion-victim-y, and is absolutely appropriate for office environments (unlike crazy, two-toned ombré).

And while brunette ombré-loving beauties like Mila Kunis, Jessica Alba, and Lily Aldridge have already transitioned to the flattering technique for winter, it’s a look that translates to virtually every base shade of color. Even redheads, who didn’t get as much love during the ombré craze, can play with ease.

We were first alerted to sombré by the color experts at L’Oréal Professionnel, who were finding that clients were requesting strong color for fall, but wanted it to be more natural-looking. “Sombré is a fantastic evolution from ombré. I’m living for beautiful, rich, tortoise shell shades and jewel tones of garnet and amethyst, all of which look amazing in sombré style,” says L’Oréal Professionnel Artist Jason Backe, who uses the ammonia-free salon INOA line to achieve the look.

Other color pairing ideas to consider: sun-kissed warmth for blondes, shimmer bronze on brunette, redheads with rose gold and cinnamon for deep darks. Like its cousin, sombré is ultra forgiving to growing roots, and you’ll likely be able to sneak more time in between colorings than usual.

Sombré also helps prevent highlights from taking over your hair—like when you go for a couple of touch-ups, and suddenly you’re an all-over blonde six months later. With sombré, maintaining gently contrasting depth is part of the technique.

“With this look, you still get to enjoy forgiven roots and ribbons of pretty highlights, but women feel more polished than they do with ombré, because it’s natural and subtle,” says San Diego salon owner and stylist Jet Rhys.

And according to Beverly Hills celebrity colorist Kim Vo, you can achieve sombré with a single process and final toning glaze for shine. Which means that if you’re going to a salon to get the look, it’ll cost less than other more complicated color options.

Considering the ease of sombré, we predict this is one trend that will be around for quite a while.

4 Haircut Tips for Curly Hair Gals

makeup.com

curl_hair-haircut_tips

by Jessica Hagy

If your hair is naturally curly, you know that sometimes a hairstylist’s scissors can make you feel a bit… anxious. Since there are a few ways to go wrong with curly haircuts, we decided to enlist an expert, professional hairstylist Jet of Jet Rhys Salon, to educate us on the best haircuts for curly hair—and tips to keep in mind during your next salon visit.

1. Long Layers Are Your Friend

“Whether your hair curly hair is short, medium, or long in length you will always have a great hair day when you have long layers!” Jet says. “Curls look their best when there is weight inside, regardless of the external length. When the internal layers are cut too short, you end up looking like a puffy poodle,” she advises.

Looking for a fresh cut? Consider “collar-length and blunt, with a few heavy layers around the face. Blunt ends are huge for this season and the minimal layering will make your curls even more sexy and grown up,” Jet says.

2. Say No to the Razor

“Avoid any haircut that involves a razor, or thinning shears,” Jet advises. “They take the spring away from the curl and it ends up looking frizzy, dry and damaged.”

3. Be Wary of Bangs

“Also avoid Bangs! Your bangs will not curl, because they are too short and they will end up looking like a visor on your forehead!” Jet says. So, that’s probably a no go…

4. Communicate

“Always let your stylist know if you love and embrace your curls, or if you cheat on them from time to time. By that I mean do you like the option to blow-out it out and have it smooth? If so that’s a game changer and your stylist will need to cut your hair to wear both ways,” Jet says.

Also, “know your curly hair very well before you go for your new cut. If you love your hair the first day you shampoo, that’s the day to go in to your stylist, so they can see exactly the way you love to wear your curl. If you love the third day after shampoo (which would let the stylist know ‘ahhhhhh, this woman likes her curl more flattened’) get your cut on that day so your stylist can see the hair,” Jet says.

How to Look Gorgeous in 8 Minutes a Day

It’s not just what you apply to your skin, hair, and nails that matters—when you apply it can yield dramatic results, fast!

Article By: Krista Bennett DeMaio

shower_womanYou’re busy, we know! Managing a healthy lifestyle is no small thing. Your day consists of a carefully orchestrated agenda filled with meal planning, fitting in workouts, connecting with your family and friends, and oh yeah, balancing all of it with a career, hobbies, and any other activity you find rewarding. So who needs to waste time slathering on beauty products that don’t deliver results? Not you!

Fortunately, you can increase the efficacy of your everyday beauty treatments, just by applying them at the right time. So go ahead, break out your day planner and pencil in these get-pretty appointments.

The best time to deep condition your hair: Morning

Why:
Your hair will soak up moisture any time you offer it, but by applying a leave-in conditioner, before you leave the house, you’re giving your hair a little extra protection against damaging UV light, says Jet Rhys, a San Diego salon owner. “The leave-in conditioner will create a protective shield of humectants around the hair and plug up any porous spots,” she explains. Without it, sun can penetrate strands, fading your color and leaving hair dehydrated and dull. In the shower, shampoo and condition your hair as usual. Towel dry, then apply a leave-in treatment to towel-dried hair from the mid-shaft to ends.

Fall’s Hottest Hair Color Trends

shape.com_.logo_

By Krista Bennett DeMaio

Whether you’re craving a cool blonde, rich brunette, or vibrant red shade, here’s your celeb-inspired, expert-approved fall hair color report

Cashmere Blonde

michelle-williams

“Say bye-bye to yellow blonde and hello to soft cashmere—a very expensive-looking haircolor,” says San Diego-based salon owner and colorist Jet Rhys, who cites Michelle Williams as the perfect example. The icy hue is a blend of several soft tones such as pale ivory, mink, and sandy blonde.

Color Veiling

jennifer-aniston

This trend is more about the technique than the actual color. The top layer of hair is dyed lighter than the base, creating a see-through, veil-like effect when the darker shade peeks through, Rhys says. Jennifer Aniston is currently sporting the trend with her light-on-dark blonde hue.

Bronde

jennifer-lopez

Not light enough to be a full-fledged blonde but not quite dark enough to be considered a true brunette, this gorgeous shade, called bronde (brown-blonde) is somewhere in the middle of the two. These honey, caramel, and butterscotch shades really pop on women who, like Jennifer Lopez, have a warm complexion.

Cocoa Brown

mila-kunis

This season, brunettes are getting darker and glossier. It’s all about the cocoa and sable browns, without any hint of brassiness (a.k.a. orange tones), Rhys explains. And while Mila Kunis’ color may look like one single tone, it’s most likely a blend of three to four shades. “No one strand of color is exactly the same,” Rhys says, which is key for creating dimension and high-shine.

Copper Penny Red

jessica-chastain

Weaving golden copper tones into a vibrant red base makes for a sophisticated and rich red. “This color looks amazing on anyone with a creamy, milky skin tone,” Rhys says. Case in point: Check out how radiant Jessica Chastain’s alabaster skin looks against her copper-y strands.

Sombré

jennifer-lawrence

The latest spin on the ever-popular ombré hair color (a gradation from dark to light) is sombré, or the much more subtle ombré. Gone are the dark roots and super-light tips or the harsh line of demarcation that tends to appear mid-shaft. It’s a “calmed-down,” more gradual version where the roots are only slightly darker than the ends, Rhys says. “The overall look is more polished and grownup-looking.” Jennifer Lawrence’s honey-hued hair is a prime example.

Midsummer Hair Repair: 3 Steps to Shiny, Sexy Hair

Style_Glossy

By Jet Rhys

jet-smJet Rhys is a stylist, a colorist, a salon owner and an educator. She has been featured in AllureHarper’s Bazaar, W Magazine and SELF. Her motto is “Look, study and attack.”

It’s midsummer … or as some of my clients call it: “Help me!!”

After weeks of high humidity, scorching sun, dips in chlorinated pools or saltwater, hair has gone haywire. It’s fried and dull and refuses to hold any style.

It’s time to take back control. Here are a few strategies to help you get your hair shiny, bouncy and behaving!

1. Identify the damage

Run your fingers through your hair. Do your ends feel crunchy? If so, it’s time for a cut. It’s the only way to get rid of that damage. But you can take baby steps. Ask your stylist to trim just half an inch, and schedule another shaping for five to six weeks from now to dust off more of those splits.

2. Shampoo and condition your hair like a pro.

You actually want to apply shampoo to your scalp — where dirt and oil accumulates — not to your hair. Your hair will get enough of a cleansing when you rinse out the shampoo and the suds run down your strands.

Use a moisturizing conditioner after you shampoo. Every time your shampoo. This time you want to target the ends of your hair. Rub a quarter-size amount of conditioner between your palms and rake it through your hair, from an inch or so away from your roots all the way to the ends.

3.  Treat with a deep-conditioning mask once a week.

A mask is like a multivitamin for your thirsty, parched hair, providing the “nutrition” it craves. For down-to-the-cuticle penetration, I like to apply a mask to damp hair, then cover it with a damp, hot towel and wait 10 minutes before rinsing off.

Bumble and Bumble Thickening Dryspun Finish

Celebrity Stylist

“So many of our clients want to get their hands on this spray that we’ve had to create a telephone book sized waiting list!”

Thick hair is in, it’s all about texture this season and this product provides just that. Bumble and Bumble Thickening Dryspun Finish uses crazy technology to help you create your ultimate style! While it’s not a dry shampoo (and don’t get me wrong, I love dry shampoos), Dryspun is like a pure silk powder that’s light and airy and not as matte as dry shampoos. This wizard of styling products creates shine, hold, and best of all it’s colorless. First, spray and massage the product through dry hair and then scrunch and shake your locks. You’ll see that there’s absolutely no visible residue left behind on your hands — or your amazing style!

An 8-Step Tutorial: Emma Stone’s Stunning Red Carpet Updo

Latest-Hairstyles.com

By: Aly Walansky

What makes Emma’s red carpet updo look so adorable? We love it because it doesn’t look old and it’s cleverly re-invented by pairing a deep, dramatic, low-skimming part with an asymmetrical twist!

“Updos can be very tricky. They can make or break you! They can make you look matronly, or they can be jaw-dropping gorgeous. To get Emma’s on-point, red carpet-worthy updo, just follow these easy steps!” says celebrity hair stylist Jet Rhys.

es-red_carpet

1. Apply a quarter-sized amount of Bumble and bumble Thickening Full Foam Mousse throughout damp hair (you may need a half dollar amount if you have thick hair), and comb through evenly from roots to tips.

2. Use a comb to part your hair at the outer edge of your eyebrow for a dramatic low side part. The lower the part, the more dramatic!

3. Blow dry hair with a medium round brush (we love the KareCo medium round thermal brush!), lifting sections of hair and rolling as you blow, making sure that you have bend on the ends — this part is important!

4. Next, grab a curling wand. The top is wider than the bottom, giving you lots of haphazard waves. Not to mention that it’s super easy to do, and you’ll see mega results fast. Just take about nine sections of hair — four sections at the back, one on either side, two on top and two at the crown. Note that this could be more or less depending on your texture of hair. Starting at the nape area, take a section of hair and wrap it around the wand. Follow this throughout the head, section by section, until finished.

5.Use a fine, workable, moveable hairspray, and mist your waves. We love Bumble and bumble Does It All Styling Spray because it gives hold to the style but without the dreaded stiff crunchies.

6. Next, run your fingers through your waves. If you use a brush, this will collapse all the work you have done, so resist the urge!

7. Gather your hair loosely (like you are going to put the hair into a ponytail), twist it and pin it into a low side deconstructed bun.

8. Allow the wisps to fall from your updo. This is so super sexy because they frame the face and take the severity of an updo and turns it a bit more playful!
