American Salon: California Cool

California Cool

Jet Rhys Salon  Situated in the fashionable Hillcrest neighborhood of San Diego, Jet Rhys Salon’s flagship location recently underwent a major redesign intended to update the look of the space while also evoking the feeling of the salon’s second location. “We tied in elements from the Solana Beach, CA, salon in order to forward the branding, but we didn’t abandon the serendipity the inspired the original salon,” says co-owner Jet, who first opened the salon in 1992 with partner Rhys. The functional and clean design of the 1,400-square-foot salon boasts a large cutting area with a vaulted ceiling and custom-welded work stations featuring large mirrors. The design also incorporates a new braid and blow-out bar, as well as flat-screen TVs hanging above the shampoo bowls showing the latest fashion collections. Staying on top of cutting-edge design is only one of the reasons for Jet Rhys’ continued success; it’s the duo’s passionate approach to hairdressing that makes all the difference. “Rhys and I are so lucky that we love, live, breathe and eat hair to this day, just like we did when we met at Vidal Sassoon,” Jet says. “We believe it’s not about where we’ve been but where we’re going.”–L.A.

Modern Salon: Color Shadowing

Color Shadowing

With variations on the bowl cut breaking out on runways, Jet Rhys, San Diego, California, Joe Randazzo, owner of Honolulu’s J salon and Yasmine Essa Brooks, Studio DNA, Los Angeles held a three-day Hawaiian teaching Soiree’ with the J salon team to perfect the cut and find the ideal color shift that underscores asymmetry. The model was a natural Level 3 with Level 6 gold-toned highlights.

V-Panel formula: 1 tube of L’Oréal Professionnel Majirel (4.65) Majirouge and 2.6 oz. of 20-volume Majicreme developer
Base formula: 1 tube of L’Oréal Professionnel Majirel (1N) and 2.6 oz. of 20-vol. Majicreme developer

Application: Create a deep, asymmetrical V-section, with the open ends beginning at the inner eye brow and behind the ear, and the point occurring just shy of the crown (this avoids a bright spot on top of the head). Work through the section in 1/4-inch slices, applying the V-panel formula from roots to ends. Outline the V-shape with cotton to prevent bleed. Then apply the Base formula to the regrowth of the rest of the hair, comb through to the ends and process for 30 minutes. Shampoo and rinse the Base formula first; then remove the foils and shampoo the V-shaped panel.

WORLD AIDS DAY 2010: 500 Hairdressers unite against AIDS.

Over 500 hair stylists have invaded the United Nations for a cause far more urgent than just your typical bad hair day intervention.

Today, kicks off the United States launch of Hairdressers Against AIDS, a joint venture between L’Oréal and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), which urges stylists to use the often intimate, tell-all relationships they have with clients as a jumping point to educate them about AIDS prevention, testing and available treatment resources.

“The longest relationship I’ve ever had with a man has been with my hair stylist, Garren,” said Allure Editor in Chief Linda Wells, to the laughs and knowing smiles of the room filled with hairdressers who had flown in from all parts of the country to support the cause.

It’s that uniquely special and loyal relationship that often deepens over years that allows hairdressers in particular to be very effective advocates, as they can gab details surrounding sexual activity that most women won’t even share with loved ones and partners.

“Today, information is the only vaccine against HIV,” said John Tedstrom, President and CEO of the Global Business Coalition on HIV/AIDS, TB and Malaria.

L’Oréal higher-ups, government officials and AIDS educators who addressed the crowd emphasized that blasting through the stigma surrounding HIV and creating an open atmosphere for discussion could actually save clients’ lives.

The 500 stylists will brave downpour and windy conditions to descend upon Times Square, with a goal of creating one million conversations about HIV and AIDS with New Yorkers. The effort aims to spread awareness and curb the spread of death and disease in order to honor World AIDS Day.

Celebrity stylists like Ted Gibson, Jason Backe, Tracey Cunningham and Jet Rhys will be on hand to pound the pavement for the long day of aggressive volunteer work.

“AIDS isn’t talked about because women don’t want to feel tainted or associated with disease, it can seem dirty. But we have to spark the conversation — it can save lives. And listening to the speakers made me realize that I need to talk to my own two teenage boys about it,” Rhys told StyleList.

And the HIV positive Regan Hofmann — whose long flowing blonde locks and Ivy-league upper class upbringing seems to fly in the face of the stereotypical AIDS patient — said it was also her hairstylist who was the first to comfort her in the shocking aftermath of her fatal diagnosis.

“I was scared my hairdresser wouldn’t want to touch my hair again. But after sitting down for a shampoo and feeling him run his fingers through my hair, I felt safe and comforted in a way I wasn’t able to before,” said the Editor In Chief of POZ Magazine.

American Salon: Flying High with Jet Rhys

jr-americansalon_article-jul10

Instead of simply expanding when their popular salon exceeded its capacity, Jet and Rhys
of San Diego’s Jet Rhys Salon opened a second location in Solana Beach, CA, much to
the delight of clients who were coming from 20 to 40 miles away for the duo’s cut and
color expertise. The 2,800-square-foot salon, which made its debut in February, features
an open layout with a dedicated check-in and retail area. Like the flagship location, the
shampoo in the new salon features overhead flat-screen televisions showcasing the
latest runway collections. On Sundays and Mondays, the salon transforms into a L’Oreal
Professional education center, offering courses on classic and advanced techniques for
stylist and colorist. “There has been such a demand for continuing education,” Jet says.
“It has catapulted our business by creating a buzz with staff and models.”
While building the new salon was a challenge—-“Always add three extra months to
what the architects tell you!” Jet advises—now that the doors are finally open, business
is already booming. “Our clients are so grateful that we’re closer, and the referrals are
pouring in,” Jet says. Along with word-of-mouth marketing, the salon has been reaching
out to local television and radio stations to offer makeovers and hair advice and has been
using sites like Facebook to fill open appointment slots. “We have seen the power of social
networking,” she says. What’s next for the ambitious duo behind the salons? Says Jet, “Our
dream is to open several JetRhys locations across the United States.” —L.M.

american_salon-logo

Greetings my fellow beauty connoisseurs,

What do you get when you bring thousands of fashionistas together under a huge
umbrella? It’s the one and only IBS New York show. This Jet is soaring from seeing so much talent and passion & I hope I never come in for a landing! A huge round of applause for the platform artists, educators, vendors, models and all the licensed professionals for coming together for a shared goal, and that is to inspire and excite each and every one of us. We can bring our new knowledge and techniques back to our salons for our teams and clients. Now is the time to open up our minds and re-invent our services that we give to our wonderful, loyal clients.

Color tip of the week: When using more than one color on your client, use cotton to keep the color from intermingling. Until next time my friends!

Cheers, Jet
